Economic Freedom Ranking of States

New Jersey comes in 42nd; California is 49th. That sounds about right. World Mag Blog speculates:
The conventional wisdom of liberal Republicans and libertarians is that moral freedom and economic freedom go together. But this does not seem to be the case. Why is it that the more culturally liberal states, which make a point of their moral tolerance, have less economic freedom, while culturally conservative states have more economic freedom? Could this be a "Brave New World" inversion of Karl Marx, in which moral license is the opiate of the people, keeping them pleasure-saturated and thus more easily exploited and controlled?
